I often wish I were somewhere else. Not necessarily because of unhappiness with my current location; it’s because I think there must be someplace better out there. And I don’t think I’m alone. We all spend time distracting ourselves from our present location with the hopes that we’ll discover that ideal place. But the ideal place doesn’t exist. From far away, we only see the best parts of our dream destination. We often fail to realize that every corner of the world (desirable or not) is much more ordinary than it seems in our minds. These paintings examine the clashing of aspiration and reality in a geographic sense. Cartographic in nature and featuring highly simplified symbolism, the works attempt to maintain the conventional elements of cartography along with the possibilities offered by digital satellite imagery and varying degrees of transparent paint. The mix of imagery portrays our inconsistent and incomplete notions of a location like a collage of desires. The elements of repetition explore how humans are influenced primarily by each other, often creating a pattern that makes us question (or just simply notice) the virtues of a location. neighbourhood is the relationship between entities that are (placed or happen to be) near each other on a landscape. The scale could be small, from a set of items on a coffee table, to large, like a swath of country we see with our red eyes from a jet. It is about a sense of place, whether it is natural or manufactured. And when we see a neighbourhood, or are within one, what do we acknowledge? Where do we wave to? What do we turn away from? What draws our interest? The neat array of settlement we approach, or the emerging landscape when we leave? The landscape is an ambivalent, but responding being. Much like a body healing a wound, the marks on a landscape will often heal but sometimes remain scarred. The irregularity and conformity of features on a landscape are stored in our left-side brains as basic representations of place – or in cartographic terms – of points, lines, areas and symbols; but, the mood, the sense of comfort and the appeal of a place are infused in our right-brain as non-definable qualities.
