THE GRASS IS GREENER
I often wish I were somewhere else.
Not necessarily because of unhappiness with my current location; it’s because I think there must be someplace better out there. And I don’t think I’m alone. We all spend time distracting ourselves from our present location with the hopes that we’ll discover that ideal place.
But the ideal place doesn’t exist. From far away, we only see the best parts of our dream destination. We often fail to realize that every corner of the world (desirable or not) is much more ordinary than it seems in our minds.
These paintings examine the clashing of aspiration and reality in a geographic sense.
Cartographic in nature and featuring highly simplified symbolism, the works attempt to maintain the conventional elements of cartography along with the possibilities offered by digital satellite imagery and varying degrees of transparent paint. The mix of imagery portrays our inconsistent and incomplete notions of a location like a collage of desires. The elements of repetition explore how humans are influenced primarily by each other, often creating a pattern that makes us question (or just simply notice) the virtues of a location.
Exhibition ran at the Arts Underground in Whitehorse Yukon from Oct 7 - Nov 1, 2011.
